Welcome to the Reclaimed West Co. Blog!
By Molly Hryciw
We’re so excited to have you here! This is your go-to space for everything design, room planning, home organization, and creating spaces that are both fun and functional. We’ll also be sharing helpful tips for getting your home market-ready when it’s time to sell.
Our Story
Reclaimed West Co. was built in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Foothills, but its roots reach back to Welcome, Ontario, where I spent my weekends and summers on a boat 180-acre farm along the Ganaraska River. I spent my childhood learning from my Grandpa Dave and Grandma Pat — two people who unknowingly planted the seeds for what would become my passion for reclaimed pieces.
It all started in Grandma’s basement and Grandpa’s implement shed, where my imagination ran wild. I was constantly asking about the old, dust-covered items tucked away on shelves and hanging from beams — what were they used for, and what could they become? Among the cobwebs, horseshoes, and barn cats, I found the inspiration to give old things new life.
I’ll never forget when my grandma lent me a small wooden table to use as a desk in our kitchen. It was a simple 2-foot by 4-foot piece, but I will never forget when my grandma said “I am lending you the table to borrow” she believed that if an item had good bones it could serve many different purposes in its lifetime. When we no longer needed it, it went back to Grandma’s basement, waiting for its next chapter. That memory has stuck with me — a quiet lesson in how the simplest pieces can be reimagined and reused.
Simple Questions to Ask Before Letting Go
When you’re about to toss something out, pause and ask yourself:
Can I reuse this, or is it truly just taking up space?
Would a coat of paint or a small repair give it new life?
Do I know someone — a friend, a neighbour — who could use this in their home?
You might see this as a lesson in “pack-ratting,” but I invite you to look deeper. In today’s world, upcycling and reusing furniture isn’t just about saving money or avoiding waste — it’s about letting pieces live different lives, in different spaces, with different people.
Think of it like a sweater swap or those hand-me-down clothes you got from your cool older cousin. Objects, like clothes, can have many lives — if we let them.
Our Mission
This reuse-and-reclaim mentality is at the heart of Reclaimed West Co. It’s an anchor in our mission and vision for the spaces we hope to bring to life through our interior design journey. We believe every home tells a story — and sometimes, the pieces we choose to fill it with have stories of their own.
What’s Next
Next week, we’ll dive into our very first design discussion: how to combine multiple design styles to create something that feels uniquely yours. I can’t wait to share it with you!
Happy designing,
Molls
